Version 2.0 | 27/10/2025

1. Quick Start

Follow these steps to perform your first Character Analysis:

  • Navigate to the **Character Study** page from the home screen.
  • In the input box, enter a KJV scripture reference (e.g., `1 Samuel 17`).
  • Click the **'Analyze'** button.
  • A dialog will appear with characters found in the passage. Select one (e.g., 'David').
  • Click **'Analyze Selected Character'** to view the full report.
  • Explore the different sections of the analysis using the accordion controls.

Note: Admin features for editing and deleting reports are restricted by default.

2. Upload & Analyze

What it does

The Character Study tool accepts a KJV scripture reference or an uploaded document (PDF, TXT, DOCX) to perform a deep analysis of a biblical figure within that context.

Inputs Accepted

You can provide either a standard KJV reference (e.g., `Genesis 22:1–14`, `1 Samuel 17`, `John 3`) or upload a text-based document.

Step-by-Step

  1. Enter the scripture reference or upload your document.
  2. Click 'Analyze'. The system will identify all characters mentioned or speaking.
  3. From the dialog box, select the single character you wish to study.
  4. The tool will generate a comprehensive report structured into sections like Overview, Typology, and Application.

Short Example

Enter `2 Samuel 11:1–15`, click Analyze, and choose ‘David’ from the list to study his actions in that passage.

3. Optional References Inclusion

You can provide the AI with extra context for its analysis by including items from your Supplemental References library.

  1. First, tick the checkbox labelled 'Include Supplemental References'. This will enable the dropdown menu.
  2. Open the dropdown and select up to three reference items.
  3. Run the analysis. The AI will use the content of your selected references to inform its response.

Short Example

When analyzing 'Grace', tick ‘Include Supplemental References’ → choose ‘Augustine, City of God’ from the dropdown to add patristic context.

4. Working with the Generated Report

The generated report is interactive. You can expand and collapse sections. Several actions are available:

  • **Preview:** Opens a new browser tab showing how the report will look when printed, including all formatting.
  • **Print:** Opens your system's print dialog to print the report directly.
  • **Share:** Uses your device's native share functionality (if available) or copies a direct link to the report.
  • **Download PDF:** This offers two modes:
    • **Client Mode (html2pdf.js):** Faster, ideal for quick drafts. Runs in your browser.
    • **Server Mode (Playwright/Chromium):** Slower but produces a pixel-perfect, publication-quality PDF. Recommended for final versions.

Short Example

After generating a report, click ‘Download PDF’ → choose ‘Server’ mode for a typeset-quality A4 document.

5. Print & Pagination Controls

For custom print layouts (primarily for developers or advanced HTML editing), you can use CSS classes to control pagination:

  • `.page-break`: Inserts a page break before the element.
  • `.avoid-break`: Prevents a page break within the element.
  • `.keep-with-next`: Attempts to keep the element on the same page as the one that follows it (useful for headings).
  • `.print-only` / `.screen-only`: Shows or hides elements specifically for printing.

You can also configure an optional running header and footer in the print/PDF export settings.

Short Example

In the HTML, insert `

` between major report sections to ensure they start on a new page when printed.

6. Admin-Only Features

Editing and deleting controls on the **References** and **Saved Reports** pages are locked for regular users.

How to Unlock

  1. Find a disabled control (e.g., a greyed-out 'Delete' button). A tooltip will say: *“Admin only — double-click to unlock”*.
  2. Double-click the disabled button.
  3. The **Admin Unlock** dialog will appear. Enter your administrator password.
  4. The controls will now be enabled for your current session.

Admin Badge & Logout

When logged in, a green **Admin** badge is visible in the header. Clicking this badge will show a dropdown or overlay with a 'Logout as admin' button to end your administrative session.

Important: Never display or share administrative passwords. All documentation should use `[admin password hidden]`.

Short Example

On the Saved Reports page, double-click a disabled 'Delete' button → enter `[admin password hidden]` in the dialog → the button becomes active.

7. Deeper Dives

After an initial analysis is complete, you can use the 'Deeper Dive' feature on any section to get more detailed, AI-generated insights. Available topics include:

  • **Original Languages:** A closer look at key Hebrew/Greek lemmas and syntax.
  • **Sitz im Leben:** More detail on the historical and literary setting.
  • **Midrash/Jewish Interpretation:** Insights from Jewish rabbinical commentaries.
  • **Typology & Symbolism:** Deeper connections to Christ and New Testament realities.

Short Example

After analyzing the character of Esther, click ‘Deep Dive: Midrash & Jewish Interpretation’ on the Typology section to append notes from Jewish commentary traditions.

8. Troubleshooting

  • **Print/Preview Popup Blocked:** If a new window doesn't open, check if your browser's popup blocker is active for this site and disable it.
  • **References Dropdown is Greyed Out:** You must first tick the 'Include Supplemental References' checkbox to activate the dropdown menu.
  • **Admin Unlock Not Appearing:** Ensure you are double-clicking directly on a disabled button, such as 'Delete' or 'Edit'.

For further assistance, use the **AI User Guide** on the home page for interactive help.

9. Appendix

Supported KJV Reference Patterns

The system supports standard KJV notation, including book names (e.g., "1 Samuel"), chapters ("John 3"), specific verses ("Genesis 22:1"), and verse ranges ("Genesis 22:1-14").

Formatting in Exports

The Print and PDF export options are designed to retain the visual formatting of the report as closely as possible, including headings, lists, and blockquotes.
